A very irritating problem which is often recurring is the slow closing of the Microsoft Office 97 applications like Word and Excel, sometimes takes up to 30 seconds, even if no changes have been done. The problem is a Microsoft problem, which is fixed with the Service Release 1 (SR1) available from the Microsoft support website. It is possible also to manually fix the problem, which is caused by Outlook 97, simply by : Open Outlook 97, go to Tools > Options > Journal and remove all the ticks from the bottom left box ( there is one for Word, Excel etc.. ), then click Apply and there you are... fixed. If you are getting data corruption of your data, like in an accounting program, could be a memory problem, either the physical chips are faulty or the hard disk might be full and fragmented. Check in My Computer > C drive > right click > properties and check the available disk space, less the 10% of the total disk is not good, delete not needed software or upgrade to a bigger drive. The very popular Realtek chipset network card was also famous for corrupting data over a network if the driver used was the one supplied with Windows 98, updating to the latest driver fixed the problem. In conclusion, a corrupted data could be derived from many causes : hardware, software, drivers as well as power supply surges and failures.
With the new MS Office suites, there are a number of service packs coming out
of Microsoft itself, we recommend to use the built-in facility under the
help menu to "check for updates" on the MS website.
Also you can find free add on like a converter to enable to open the latest
office 2007 docs with earlier versions of Office (2003-XP) or to produce an
Adobe PDF file as save as... in MS Office 2007.
The above applies to MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. We found that a lot of times, just ensuring that the latest Service Pack or the latest hot fix from Microsoft can solve a lot of problems.
